Terrace

How’s this for a proposition: a penthouse apartment on the Chiswick borders with a terrace on two sides, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a leafy park right on the doorstep. That alone would make the £725,000 price tag ridiculously attractive. But actually it’s got plenty more to offer besides.

This covetable 900 sq ft property is situated in a boutique development that has been designed with the utmost care. Open the main front door and the hallways and staircase are evidence of the attention to detail that runs throughout. In some buildings the common parts are merely finished to an acceptable standard, here they themselves pack a wow factor via sophisticated use of materials, texture and lighting.

This continues into the apartment itself. Every room looks understatedly chic, with a contemporary, muted colour scheme and huge windows that flood the place with natural light.

Yet there’s also plenty of flare. This never veers towards bling but lends it an attractive individualism. There’s the high-end wallpaper, marble kitchen worktops, statement light fittings and tasteful objets, all courtesy of award-winning local interiors specialist Zulufish. And you can’t help but be blown away by that terrace, which extends around the building in an ‘L’ shape and is boundaried by frameless glass balustrading.

Most importantly, the entire vision has been executed without skimping on quality. That wallpaper, say – it comes from the luxury brand Arte. The appliances in the kitchen – they are all from Bosch. The cabinetry – that was all made bespoke by HUX. And the bathroom fittings – you can thank the upscale manufacturer Hansgrohe for those.

You might expect the location to be the compromise. In fact, it occupies an enviable position just three minutes from the green space of historic Acton Park and close to both the leafy streets of Chiswick and the shopping hub of Shepherd’s Bush. It’s a short walk to Stamford Brook tube station and from there just 19 minutes to Victoria. Oh, and did we mention that Cross Rail is coming to the area?

Like we said, that price tag is quite something.

Neighbourhood

Make this place home, and you don’t get one neighbourhood – you get the best of three. A short walk south and you’re in leafy Chiswick; head east and you’re in Shepherd’s Bush. But your immediate vicinity is Acton, an area rich in character that blends modern amenities with local heritage. In the 19th century, the area was fondly known as "Soapsud Island" – many of the businesses here provided laundry services to West End hotels – and its importance to Victorian London still shines through in its charming old almshouses, churches and period dwellings.

You also see it in Acton’s notable greenery. Acton Park is a Victorian creation that now not only offers 27 acres of gardens and open space, but also plenty of leisure facilities. There’s an attractively designed mini golf course, skate park, tennis and basketball courts. Ten minutes south is Wendell Park, with its nature conservation area, while just a little further on lies 20.5-acre Ravenscourt Park – a jewel in the crown of the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

They all represent great examples of what was once called rus in urbe – the illusion of countryside in the middle of town – and the ‘urbe’ is no less impressive. The immediate area is replete with the kinds of local businesses that you will always be grateful for having nearby. Take The English Butcher (owned by chef Tim English), for instance, or the fishmonger Atari-Ya (which also sells specialist Japanese foods). There are highly regarded Asian restaurants such as North China and independent boutiques such as The Village Trading Store. And, given the neighbourhood’s history, it’s no surprise that it is well served by pubs. The George & Dragon is a standout that dates back to 1759 but has been refurbished to a smart standard and now has its own microbrewery.

While there’s plenty more to keep you close to your apartment – including Virgin Active's huge west London hub complete with pool and tennis courts, as well as a revamped David Lloyd health club – the attractions of Chiswick, with its Michelin-starred restaurants, and Shepherd’s Bush, with its Westfield shopping centre, are just over 20 minutes walk away. And then there is Stamford Brook, or the future Cross Rail, to whizz you straight into the West End. Better add that neighbourhood to the list, too.
