Neighbourhood

While walking across Westminster Bridge in 1802, William Wordsworth was moved to compose a poem about the beauty of the surrounding cityscape. “Earth has not any thing to show more fair,” he wrote. “Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!” Two centuries later, Westminster still retains that core frequency of composure. Despite being the seat of government and replete with tourist traps, the side streets of this neighbourhood are remarkably peaceful. Any resident will attest: walk home after seeing a West End play and the place has a silent majesty that’s truly beguiling.


But it takes more than a vibe to lure residents to an area. Westminster has cultivated a remarkable sense of community for such a central location, which is partly down to enclaves such as Strutton Ground market (where you’ll find traditional stalls selling street food, art and clothing) and a host of small businesses frequented by those in the know. The Laughing Halibut fish and chip shop, the Regency Cafe and the Red Lion pub have been haunts for MPs and locals for years. St. James’s Park with its picturesque lake and famous pelicans lies just five minutes north – but those who call Westminster home will tip you off about Victoria Tower gardens, a pocket of parkland right alongside the Thames in the shadow of Parliament. It is full of historic monuments and also offers a playground for families with children. Those children, incidentally, are well served by nearby schools, whether that’s St Matthews CE Primary, Millbank Academy or Westminster School among others.


But be under no illusions: while Westminster offers a civilised redoubt from the cut and thrust of the capital, the buzz of London’s entertainment districts and commercial hubs can be quickly reached thanks to three tube stations. Between them, Westminster, St James’s Park and Victoria provide immediate access to the Jubilee, Victoria and District and Circle lines. Or then again you could just walk.
